Three things about me
I was born in Miami. My grandmother is Native American. My great grandfather fled Spain to grow tobacco in Cuba in the 1800s. I grew up in Venezuela but I’ve lived all over the world. I feel like I belong to a lot of different places and cultures. I’m able to adapt and adopt things as my own. I consider this my greatest asset.
I'm a different kind of writer. I started writing at seven and picked up a camera around the same time. I trained as a photographer and cinematographer, so I've always approached writing visually. I don't just write ideas—I see them. That perspective has become one of my biggest creative advantages.
I’m a writer in a language that’s not my native tongue. Sometimes I make up words and pronounce them in funky ways. I used to feel self-conscious about this and then I re-watched Game of Thrones EP 1 S1, where Tyrion Lannister tells John Snow “Let me give you some advice, bastard. Never forget what you are, the rest of the world will not. Wear it like armour and it can never be used to hurt you” and it hit me; I will always be different. My accent will be part of my storytelling and that’s not bad. Different is good. it’s just who I am.
